what is cbt

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a short-term form of psychotherapy that focuses on our thoughts, feelings and our actions as a way of bringing about long-term change regarding personal problems. The basic premise that underpins CBT is that our thoughts, feelings and behaviour are inter-related, so altering one can help alleviate difficulties in another.

By engaging in CBT you are able to quickly gain insight into the self-defeating and unhelpful thoughts that can cloud everyday life, which in turn can cause you to behave in ways that are both self-defeating and unhelpful, and to experience unhealthy negative emotions.

CBT is quicker and hence more effective than many other psychological therapies because it encourages you, the client, to become your own active therapist. It achieves this by encouraging you to engage in activities in between your sessions so that you can maximise the work done within the session. The focus of CBT is to enable you to achieve your goal and to live your life in a more productive and progressive manner.
